Who We Are

Built on the belief that no one should walk it alone.

"Every community carries knowledge, resilience, and cultural strength worth investing in."

The Humble Travelers Foundation is a Portland-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that activates community cultural wealth and fosters belonging through community-led impact. We focus on social equity, rebuilding communities, and celebrating diverse cultures through storytelling and shared experiences to create more connected and resilient neighborhoods.

We do not approach communities as beneficiaries of charity — we approach them as partners in shared solutions. Change happens at eye level, when people gather, when stories are shared, when barriers fall, and when dignity is protected.

What We Do

Our Programs

From cultural dining and public art to neighborhood repair and community storytelling — our programs are free, resident-led, and built on the belief that every person has something to offer and everyone deserves a seat at the table.

🍽️

Portland Cultural Table

A monthly communal dinner series bringing together immigrants, refugees, and longtime Portlanders to share meals, stories, and the food traditions that define who we are. Each gathering centers a different cultural community — their cuisine, their dining rituals, their history. Everyone is the guest. Everyone is the host.

Shared storytelling across communities
Relationship building & belonging
🎨

Sidewalk Gallery Brigade

Turning the everyday surfaces of Outer East Portland into open-air galleries — windows, fences, utility boxes, and walls — featuring original work by community artists, youth, and elders who rarely see their stories reflected in traditional art spaces. Public art is a public right. Artist stipends available. Always free to view.

Paid opportunities for community artists
Public art in accessible neighborhood spaces
Cultural visibility for underrepresented voices
📖

Portland Cultural Cookbook Contest

Community members submit recipes that reflect their cultural heritage and family traditions — along with the story behind each dish. Selected entries are published in the annual THTF Community Cookbook, translated into English and the contributor's home language, and distributed free to Portland libraries and community centers.

"There is Always Room Inside."
The Circle of Compassion

There is always room inside.

It didn't begin with a strategic plan or a boardroom decision. It began with a feeling — a refusal to walk past what we saw.

There is always room inside the circle of compassion.

There is a moment in every life when we are between places. Between stability and uncertainty. Between isolation and belonging. Between who we were and who we are becoming. At The Humble Travelers Foundation, we believe everyone is a traveler.

Not because we board planes — but because we move through seasons, communities, struggles, and growth. And in those in-between moments, something powerful can happen. We can choose connection. We can choose kindness. We can choose to build something better together.

"Giving should create a circle. A circle where generosity flows both ways. Where volunteers are honored. Where donors are connected to impact. Where communities are not 'helped' — but empowered."

We exist to strengthen communities by bridging cultural divides, empowering residents, and creating safe, inclusive spaces where people can show up for one another. Through service, cultural engagement, and grassroots action, we help neighbors become collaborators, strangers become allies, and compassion become measurable progress.

We do not believe change happens from the top down. We believe it happens at eye level — when people gather, when stories are shared, when barriers fall, when dignity is protected, when service is mutual.

Our vision is a world where connection replaces division. Where communities lead their own solutions. Where generosity is not rare — it is woven into daily life. This is not charity as rescue. This is community as partnership.
